Required Documents
- Both persons will need valid passports as proof of citizenship.
- If either of the you were previously married, then bring along the original divorce decree or, in the case of a widow or widower, the original marriage and death certificates.
- If a name change has occurred, then provide affidavits in cases where you are known by another name.
- Please note that both parties must be over 15. If any party is under 18, written authorisation from parents or guardians is required.
- An application for a marriage license must be signed and filled out at the Ministry of Legal Affairs on Queen Elizabeth Highway, St. John’s.
- The Ministry of Legal Affairs is open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 4:30 pm and on Fridays from 8am to 3pm. Tel: 462-0017, legalaffairs@antigua.gov.ag

What happens at the Ministry of Legal Affairs?
THE LEGAL PROCEDURES for a Special License
Once at the Ministry of Legal Affairs the following procedures with occur:
- Both parties must take both passports and a copy of divorce papers or original marriage and death certificates if relevant.
- Both parties will be interviewed before the license is issued. The cost for the license is EC$405 (US$150).
- The next step is to take a trip to the Registrar General’s office which is located in the old Treasury Building at the top of High Street in St. John’s.
- The fee for registering the license at the Court House is EC$100 (US$40). To obtain the official marriage certificate a fee of EC $25 (US$10) is required.
- If the wedding is performed outside the Court House, there is a Marriage Officer fee of EC$675 (US$250).
- Both parties can decide on the venue for their wedding however, the marriage must be celebrated in the presence of two or more witnesses along with the marriage officiant.
NB: Please note that ceremonies can be performed between 6 am and 6 pm.
Additionally, there is NO wait time in the country in order to obtain a Special Licence as this license is for non-residents (persons not residing in Antigua and Barbuda for at least 15 days).

THE LEGAL PROCEDURES for a Local License
This information is for persons applying for a local licence. This license is issued to individuals who are considered residents (persons residing within Antigua and Barbuda for at least 15 days).
